You’ve been meaning to get a proper website up for months. The problem isn’t usually skill; it’s that the job feels endless, so it never starts. The good news is that a clean, professional WordPress site for a small business is very achievable in one weekend if you work in the right order and resist the urge to perfect everything.
By the end of this guide you’ll have a clear Friday-to-Sunday plan that takes you from no website to a live, secure WordPress site you can share with customers on Monday.
Before you start: what “done” looks like this weekend
A weekend launch isn’t about building the perfect site. It’s about getting a solid first version live. For most South African small businesses, that means five pages:
- Home – who you are, who you help and how to contact you.
- Services or Products – what you offer, with clear descriptions.
- About – the people behind the business and why customers can trust you.
- Contact – phone, WhatsApp, email, area served and a simple form.
- Privacy policy – required if you collect any personal details through a form, and good practice under POPIA.
Everything else (a blog, a gallery, an online shop) can come later. Write this list on paper and stick to it.
Friday evening: hosting, domain and WordPress (about 1 hour)
Step 1: Choose your hosting plan
Your hosting plan is where your website lives. Pick based on what you’re building, not on what sounds impressive:
- Small (R26.80/month, 5 GB SSD) – best for a portfolio or a simple brochure-style site, like a photographer, tutor or freelance designer.
- Medium (R44/month, 10 GB SSD) – the right fit for most service businesses, such as a plumber in Centurion, a beauty salon in Soweto or an accountant in Durban, because it gives you room for more pages, images and a growing blog.
- Large (R88/month, 20 GB SSD) – ideal if you’re planning an online store with lots of product photos.
If you’re unsure, start with Medium. It’s comfortable for a five-page service site with room to grow.
Step 2: Register your domain
Every Grow Host hosting plan includes a free domain name. For a South African business, a .co.za domain tells local customers immediately that you’re based here. Keep it short, easy to spell over the phone and close to your business name. Avoid hyphens if you can.
Step 3: Install WordPress with one click
Log in to cPanel, open the WordPress installer and fill in your site name, admin username and a strong password. That’s it. One-click installs are included on all plans, so there’s no need to download files or set up databases by hand. Write down your login details somewhere safe.
Your free SSL certificate is also included, which gives your site the padlock and the “https” in the address bar. Check it’s active before you go to bed on Friday.
Get your weekend project started tonight
The Medium plan is R44/month and includes a free domain, free SSL and one-click WordPress, so you can be logged in to your new site within the hour.
Saturday: theme, pages and content (5 to 6 hours)
Step 4: Choose a lightweight theme
Go to Appearance, then Themes, and pick a well-reviewed, regularly updated free theme. Don’t spend three hours browsing. Choose one with a clean layout that looks good on a phone, because most of your visitors will arrive on mobile. Set your logo, brand colours and fonts, then move on.
Step 5: Write your content first, then build the pages
This is where most weekend projects stall. People open the page editor and stare at a blank screen. Instead, write your words in a document first:
- A one-sentence headline that says what you do and where: “Reliable garden services across the East Rand.”
- Three to five services, each with two or three sentences explaining the result for the customer.
- Your contact details, working hours and the areas you cover.
- A short About section that sounds like a real person, not a corporate brochure.
Then create each page in WordPress and paste in your copy. Use the block editor’s headings, buttons and columns to keep things tidy.
Step 6: Add images that load quickly
Use your own photos where possible: your team, your work, your premises. Before uploading, resize images to around 1 600 pixels wide and compress them. Big, unoptimised photos are the most common reason new sites feel slow.
Step 7: Set up your menu and home page
Under Settings, then Reading, set your Home page as the static front page. Under Appearance, then Menus (or the Site Editor, depending on your theme), add your five pages in a logical order. Keep Contact as the last item, where people expect it.
Sunday: plugins, checks and launch (3 to 4 hours)
Step 8: Install only the essential plugins
You need far fewer plugins than you think. For launch day, cover these bases:
- A contact form plugin.
- An SEO plugin so you can set page titles and descriptions.
- A security plugin to limit login attempts.
- A backup plugin, or a confirmed backup routine through cPanel.
Every extra plugin is something to update and something that can slow your site, so be selective.
Step 9: Test everything
- Open every page on your phone and on a computer.
- Submit your contact form and confirm the email arrives.
- Click every button and menu link.
- Check that the padlock shows on every page.
- Ask a friend to find your phone number in under ten seconds.
Step 10: Go live and tell people
Remove any “coming soon” mode, then share your link on WhatsApp, your Google Business Profile, Facebook and Instagram. Update your email signature too. If you want an address like info@yourbusiness.co.za to match your new site, look at business email hosting.
“I’m not technical. Can I really do this?”
Yes. Modern WordPress is built for non-developers, and one-click installs remove the hardest part. If you get stuck, 24/7 customer support is included with every hosting plan. And if you’d honestly rather spend your weekend running your business, our team can design the website for you instead.
“I already have a Facebook page. Do I need a website?”
Facebook is useful, but you don’t own it. Algorithms change, reach drops and accounts can be locked. A website on your own domain is the one place online that’s fully yours, it shows up in Google searches, and it makes you look established to customers comparing quotes. Use social media to send people to your site, not instead of it.
Launch your site this weekend
Pick a plan, get a free .co.za domain and free SSL, and install WordPress in one click. New customers get 60% off their first term.
FAQs
How much does it cost to launch a WordPress website in South Africa?
WordPress itself is free. Your main cost is hosting, which starts at R26.80/month on the Grow Host Small plan and includes a free domain and SSL. Premium themes or plugins are optional extras.
Can I build a WordPress site in one day?
A very simple one-page site, yes. For a proper five-page business site with written content and tested forms, a full weekend is more realistic.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. The block editor works with drag-and-drop style blocks, and themes handle the design. Coding is only needed for advanced customisations.
What happens when my introductory price ends?
The introductory price applies to your first term. Your renewal price is confirmed on your invoice before you pay, so there are no surprises.
