The first time you log in to cPanel, it can feel like the cockpit of an aeroplane: dozens of icons, technical names and no obvious place to start. Relax. You don’t need to understand all of it. Most small business owners use the same handful of tools again and again, and ignore the rest.
Here are the 10 cPanel tools you’ll actually use, what each one does and when you’d reach for it, so you can manage your website and email with confidence.
What is cPanel?
cPanel is the control panel for your hosting account. Think of your hosting as a rented office: cPanel is the building manager’s desk, where you set up email addresses, install software, manage files and check that everything’s secure. Your WordPress dashboard manages your website’s content; cPanel manages the hosting underneath it.
All Grow Host hosting plans include cPanel, from the Small plan at R26.80/month upwards.
The 10 cPanel tools you’ll actually use
1. WordPress installer
Usually found under “Software” or as a WordPress Manager. This is where you install WordPress in one click, and often where you can see your installs, update them and manage staging copies. If you only learn one tool, make it this one.
2. Email Accounts
Create professional addresses like info@yourbusiness.co.za or accounts@yourbusiness.co.za, set passwords and adjust mailbox sizes. It’s a big step up from a free webmail address on your quotes and invoices. If you need more mailboxes or storage, dedicated business email hosting plans start at R49/month for 15 mailboxes.
3. Webmail
Read and send email in your browser without setting up an app. Handy when you’re on someone else’s computer or need to check a mailbox quickly.
4. Email forwarders and autoresponders
Forwarders send copies of email from one address to another, so sales@ can land in your personal inbox. Autoresponders send an automatic reply, which is ideal over the December holidays or when you’re on site all day and want customers to know when you’ll respond.
5. SSL/TLS Status
This shows whether your free SSL certificate is installed and active for each domain and subdomain. If a browser ever warns visitors that your site is “not secure”, this is the first place to check.

All Grow Host plans include cPanel, a free domain, free SSL and one-click WordPress. Small starts at R26.80/month for new customers.
6. File Manager
A browser-based view of all the files on your hosting account. You’ll use it occasionally to upload a verification file for Google Search Console, edit a small file or remove something a plugin left behind. Be careful here: deleting the wrong file can break your site, so take a backup first.
7. Backup tools
Download a copy of your website files, databases and email settings. Even if you use a WordPress backup plugin, it’s reassuring to know where your hosting-level backup tools are, and to download a full copy before any big change.
8. Domains and subdomains
Add extra domains to your account, or create subdomains like shop.yourbusiness.co.za or staging.yourbusiness.co.za for testing changes before they go live.
9. Zone Editor (DNS)
DNS records tell the internet where to find your website and email. You’ll mostly come here when connecting a third-party service, for example verifying your domain with Google, connecting an email marketing platform or pointing a subdomain somewhere else. Change one record at a time and note the old values before you edit.
10. Disk usage
Shows how much of your storage you’re using and what’s taking up the space. If you’re getting close to your limit, it’s usually old backups, unused media or a full mailbox. It’s also a useful guide when deciding whether to move from Small (5 GB) to Medium (10 GB) or Large (20 GB).
What you can safely ignore (for now)
You’ll see plenty of other icons: cron jobs, PHP settings, Git, advanced DNS, IP blockers and more. They’re useful for developers but not needed for running a typical small business website. If a support agent or developer asks you to change something there, follow their instructions carefully, but don’t feel you need to learn them.
“I’m worried I’ll break something”
That’s a healthy instinct. Three habits will keep you safe:
- Back up before big changes. A downloaded backup means nothing is ever permanent.
- Change one thing at a time. If something goes wrong, you’ll know exactly what caused it.
- Ask before you guess. 24/7 customer support is included with every Grow Host plan, so you’re never on your own.
And if you’d rather not manage any of this yourself, our team can design and set up your website for you.

FAQs
Is cPanel the same as WordPress?
No. cPanel manages your hosting account: email, files, domains and security. WordPress manages your website’s pages and content. You’ll use both, but WordPress far more often.
How do I log in to cPanel?
Your hosting welcome email contains your cPanel login link and details. Many hosts also let you open cPanel directly from your client area.
Can I create email addresses in cPanel?
Yes. Go to Email Accounts, click Create and choose the address, password and mailbox size.
Do I need cPanel if I use WordPress?
Yes, for the hosting side. You’ll use it to install WordPress, set up email, check SSL and download backups.
